Harry Sacksioni was born in Amsterdam on 23 October 1950.
As a young boy he is especially good at playing football. In June 1962, at the age of eleven he is even accepted as an Ajax pupil. At the age of fifteen after he has played with the B-team several times, his first choice is not a professional football career but the guitar. Harry is still playing football today but just for fun and at special occasions.
At the age of eleven he gets his first Spanish guitar and the guitarist Sacksioni is born. The foundation for a long career as a guitarist and composer is laid when he gets guitar lessons from Mr. H. Wiegmans for two years. Mr. Wiegmans is not only a guitar teacher but also the conductor of a mandolin orchestra. After Sacksioni has composed ‘Mobile’ for three guitars Mr. Wiegmans asks him to write a composition for his orchestra of 25 members. Sacksioni’s first orchestra composition is called ‘Aurora’.
As a teen-ager he plays in several bands such as The Clungels, Samll Jack en George Cash. During these years he also has piano lessons for a few months. He still uses the piano now and then as you can hear on his album ‘Piste’. Through self-study he develops his characteristic style. For that reason Sacksioni is not admitted to musical college..
During his teens Sacksioni works in his fathers Amsterdam cigar shop, in a photo-shop, a week with his uncle in the fur business and one very inspiring day at the coffee-roasting house Douwe Egberts. (Which eventually results in the composition ‘prikklok 07.45’). Since his fifteenth birthday Sacksioni has worked as a studio guitarist after he has convinced Phonogram producer Hans van Hemert of his musical qualities. He accompanies many artists on the guitar. During this period he writes a number of songs to which his sister Loes Sacksioni writes the lyrics. By accident one song ‘Angelique’ finds its way to Ronnie Tober and is very well sold as the b-side number of the hit single ‘Rozen voor Sandra’. Loekie Knol also makes an album with one of their songs. Two of the songs Sacksioni writes during this period are performed at the Dutch Song Contest of 1970. ‘Linda’ sung by D.C. Lewis (lyrics by Loes Sacksioni) and ‘Voorbij is de Winter’ (lyrics by Herman Leefsma) sung by Sandra Reemer.

The artist Sacksioni is born in 1970/1971 when he performs with the politically engaged Cabaret of Sieto Hoving, Tingel/Tangel. He accompanies Sieto and Marijke Hoving (together with Frits Lambrechts on the piano) in the programme ‘Burgers op de Bres’. After just one season Sacksioni has to interrupt his work with Hoving
because of his military service. However he knows to shorten his military duty into two days and is found unfit for military service, it means the end of his work in Tingel/Tangel.
On the album ‘Goed Voor Een Glimlach’ Sacksioni co-operates with Herman Van Veen for the very first time. The recording of this album is coincides with his performances with Sieto Hoving. Sacksioni has to travel a lot between the studio in Brussels during daytime and his evening performances on stage. The co-operation on this album is so successful that Van Veen asks Sacksioni to work on his next album and to go on tour with him. At first Harry Sacksioni just has an accompanying role but after a while he is given room to write music to the songs and to play his own compositions (as ‘Meta Sequoia’, which he wrote when he was just sixteen years old.) During this period he also plays the guitar with the Jazz Orchestra of Utrecht (1971-1975).
During these years Sacksioni plays on every Van Veen album and on albums of other artists such as Joost Nuissl, Liesbeth List, Ramses Shaffy, Erik Van Der Wurff and Lucy Steymel.
In 1974 Harry co-operates not only with Van Veen but also with Liselore Gerritsen and Laurens van Rooyen in ‘Een Klein Concert’. Gradually it becomes clear it is time for Sacksioni to stand on his own feet, and perform his own music in front of his own audience with a band of his own and of course the release of his very first solo album ‘Harry Sacksioni Gitaar’.
1975 is the year in which Sacksioni performs as a solo artist on TV in the Van Speyckshow and the German ‘Session’ for the first time. A year later in 1976 his album ‘Vensters’ is released. In 1977 the national Orchestra of Belgium broadcasts the title song of this album during a TV registration of a concert in Antwerp featuring the 21-minute performance of ‘Vensters’.
It is a very busy year for Harry Sacksioni. Apart from his solo tour in The Netherlands he also composes the music for the play ‘De Witte Nachten’ (White Nights) by Dostojevski (performed by De Theaterunie). He contributes to the television series ‘Die Seltsamen Abenteuer des Herman Van Veen’ (The wondrous adventures of Herman Van Veen), he also produces/arranges Lucy Steymel’s (an American singer by origin) album ‘Gift From A Stranger’ on which he also performs as a guitarist. At this time the worldwide known Alfred J.Kwak is born. For the theatre performance of the Alfred J.Kwak story by Herman Van Veen he writes a part of the music (together with Van Veen and Van Der Wurff). During
the first series of performances of this fairytale Sacksioni takes part on his guitar. In 1978 the album ‘Om De Hoek’ is released and Sacksioni also co-operates with a Teleaccourse ‘Gitaar spelenderwijs’ (Playing the guitar without effort) by Jan Mol

In 1979 the Austrian Television broadcasts a live solo-concert of Harry Sacksioni. At this time Sacksioni also acts in a new children’s TV series created by Herman Van Veen ‘Herman En De Zes’ (Herman and the six), the continuing story of ‘De Wonderlijke Avonturen Van Herman Van Veen’ (The wondrous adventures of Herman Van Veen). In 1980 the album ‘Het Dubbelleven Van Holle Vijnman’ is released and also the album ‘Live in Amsterdam’ which is a registration of Sacksioni’s tour with a big orchestra. In May 1979 Sacksioni has his last performance with Herman Van Veen in Curacao. He only performs (for a few months) in 1981 with Van Veen in a special program ‘Herman van Veen, Erik Van Der Wurff & Harry Sacksioni’. After this he goes his own way again. In this year the album ‘Strikt Persoonlijk’ is released.
Harry co-operates with a great number of musicians. Musicians such as Erik van der Wurff, Hans Koppens, Martijn Alsters and Ger Smit, who also perform with Herman Van Veen, form his first accompanying band. Musicians come and go. Ton Scherpenzeel (Kayak), Rens van der Zalm (Fungus) who you can hear on his album ‘Intimate Strangers’ (1990) and Marten Scheffer (Wolverlei) also play in his regularly changing band. In 1988 Sacksioni performs in Antwerp together with Angelo Branduardi as guests with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Belgium. Two years earlier they both played at the Night of the Proms. A co-operation with Raymond Van ‘t Groenewoud (the album ‘Nachtjournaal’ 1984) and Frank Boeijen (CD ‘Wilde Bloemen’) results in a short tour ‘Boeijen, Sacksioni & Van ‘t Groenewoud’ in 1993.
Different production companies such as
Harlekijn Holland/Polydor, Philips/Phonogram, Mercury/Phonogram, State of Mind/Dino and since 2001 Cutaway (Sacksioni’s own label), produce Sacksioni’s albums/CDs. Most of the original albums are released on CD but unfortunately not every CD is available anymore. Although most of his albums are well sold and are rewarded with gold it is not until 1994 Sacksioni receives the Edison-instrumental award for his CD ‘Who’s Pulling the Strings’.
Sacksioni also organises master-classes and workshops, but doesn’t teach himself. Sacksioni also likes to help budding guitarists and he also is involved in the National Guitar Award (Championships) as chairman of the jury during the finale.
Sacksioni composes not only for Herman Van Veen but also for many other artists.
He also writes music for a great variety of purposes; for Television (1980 IKON youth series ‘De Zesde Klas’), leader for RTL TV quiz show Denktank, for Radio 3 (1991 File festival when he plays a composition for 50 cars and a guitar ‘De Claxofonie’) for the theatre (‘Witte Nachten’ by Dostojevski), for Ballet (1998 ‘Piste’ for the Introdans Ensemble) He also writes the music for a few commercials.
Besides writing music Sacksioni also writes lyrics. For a very long time he has left the singing to others such as Marijke Nekeman, Jopie Jonkers (‘Schaduwen’), Raymond Van ‘t Groenewoud (‘Nachtjournaal, ‘Triple Tour’) and Herman Van Veen (‘Spätnachrichten’), but in 1985 he himself sings on his album ‘Amice’ and only occasionally on stage.
During his own programs and on his own albums he especially plays his own compositions. When he plays compositions of other artists he does it in a style of his own.
Only on his tour ‘Helden’ (Heroes) does he play more compositions by other artists but as said, in his own way. You can hear a selection of this on his live-CD ‘Helden’, the very first album recorded by Sacksioni‘s own Cutaway-label.
Beginning 2003 Sacksioni will be cooperating again in his programme entitled ‘Five Great Guitars’. Sacksioni will play the guitar together with four other great guitar players such as Jan Kuiper, Eric Vaarzon Morel, Zoumana Diarra en Digmon Roovers. Because of the variety of styles of these guitar players this programme will have its very own character. The best songs are recorded on "The Five Great Guitars - Live".
Harry was asked to be an ambassador for the Pallieter Foundation, a foundation that stands up for the incurable children.
On the request of Herman van Veen Harry performs on his jubilee performance in 2005 after many years. They also perform together during the Nekka Night 2005 in the palace of sports in Antwerp and also there are two performances in Germany in the summer. Together with Digmon Roovers and Sebastiaan Kaptein (percussion) continues the ‘Harry Sacksioni & Consorten - CITY!’ Tour. The City! Tour result in the live CD City!
The third tour is also the last one with ‘The Five Great Guitars’ For ‘Groove Masters’. Special highlights in this tour are the four performances ‘Groove Masters XL’ with guitarist Larry Carlton in December. Another highlight is when Erwin Java and Harry play the ‘Bag Lady’ together. With a last performance in the Concert building in Amsterdam this project comes to an end in August.
